INTERVIEWING ATTIRE
INTERNSHIPS AND VOLUNTEER POSITIONS
You should follow the guidelines set out above for business formal, business professional, or business casual attire, and dress in the most appropriate one according to the role and organisation you’re applying for when attending an interview for an internship or volunteer position
The organisation will normally let you know beforehand what the dress code is for the interview you are attending, which most of the time will be business formal attire
Internships can provide important hands-on experience that will help you on the way to a successful career, as can volunteer positions. The way you dress plays a large part in determining whether or not you will get the opportunities you are looking for when starting off along your career, which is why it’s so important to dress well not only when attending interviews for paid employment, but also when attending internships or interviews for unpaid work as well
(As such, you should treat any interview for an internship or volunteer post like you would an interview for a paid job)
Internships will mainly tend to be business formal. However, there may be instances where a business professional or business casual style of dress is more suitable based on the type of organisation and role you are applying for. Interviews for volunteer posts tend to be a bit more relaxed and can range from anything to business professional, business casual, or business formal, depending on the organisation and duties involved. If you’re unsure, you should always check first with the organisation itself, and in the unlikely event you can’t get an answer or are still unsure of what to wear, go with the most formal style which is business formal
Remember that everything you have on, or take with you, should look need and tidy. Always iron your clothes and polish your shoes at least 24hrs before the interview
Men should wear a matching belt with any interview attire they have on
If wearing a skirt, make sure it is the appropriate length, which is either just above or below the knee. Women have the option of wearing pantyhose or not. If you find yourself with this dilemma and can’t decide which to choose, the best practice is to always choose the more conservative option, which is to wear them
