STANDARD SECTION

PROFILE STATEMENT

A profile statement is another standard section on a C.V or Resume. It can take the form of the following – Career statement/ personal statement/ or resume objective

A profile statement is an area on your C.V or resume where you can either put a job-orientated statement, or a personally orientated one. A personally orientated statement is more common with students and those who lack actual job experience, whereas a career orientated one is usually used by those with more experience who want to place a larger degree of emphasis on their career goals and accomplishments

No matter what the orientation in question, a good way to start a profile statement is by outlining any career goals you have. It should also go on to highlight your key strengths, skills, and any professional qualities you have that align with the industry or role in question

Also do your best to convey as much enthusiasm as you can for the role and industry as well, tailoring it as much as possible to the employer and industry

It is advised to keep any profile statement at around a paragraph in length, approx. 4 – 6 sentences

Example – Personal Statement

‘I am an honest, reliable individual with a mastery of first-rate communicative and interpersonal skills. My goal is to build a successful career in (name of industry), continuously improving in my role with the aspiration of one day becoming a department supervisor. Not only do I feel at ease dealing with the public, but with a passion for customer service I have lots of experience working in a fast-paced office environment and this has given me the ability to maintain very high standards of work’.

Example – Career Statement

‘With 7 year’s experience in telomere research, over the last decade I’ve dedicated my life to applying my expertise to reversing the human aging process. As a passionate researcher who possesses a strong familiarity with techniques such as Fragmentation Analysis, Chromatin Immunoprecipitation, and preparing Telomerase Assays, I bring a proven track record of contributing to high level research projects that have yielded important scientific results’.

You can also put a resume objective in place of a personal or career orientated statement too if you wish. A resume objective is a brief statement summarizing your career goals and most up to date skills and qualifications. It will also give the employer a brief overview of your professional character by outlining the type of role that you seek. In doing so, it will help them understand your career aspirations and how these align with their company’s needs

Example – Resume Objective

A resume objective is different from a personal or career statement because it tends to be more position centric and is designed to be specifically relevant to the job you are applying for – as opposed to a more generalized career or personally orientated statement, which tends to be tailored more to the professional or personal qualities of the individual writing it

‘Motivated and detail-oriented individual with strong organizational skills, seeking to transition into a customer service role. Leveraging volunteer experience and assisting others such as friends and family, I aim to provide excellent customer experiences and contribute to a positive team environment. Eager to apply problem-solving and communication skills developed through various hands-on roles, including managing tasks, finding creative resolutions to challenging situations, and helping individuals in my local community’.

Note
Some resume templates may not contain a profile section depending on how they are composed. While it is considered a standard section to have on a C.V or resume, there are no hard and fast rules as to whether you include it or not, and as such, this is a section that is sometimes omitted depending on the layout C.V or resume and preference of the person writing it
