Honors and Awards
OPTIONAL SECTION
HONORS AND AWARDS

An “Honors and Awards” section can be used on a C.V or resume to highlight your achievements and accomplishments. It is a tool that can make your document stand out in the eyes of those who see it, propelling you way ahead of the competition. Like almost all sections on a C.V or resume, the key to a successful honors and awards section is to make it as relevant to the role and organisation as possible
There are 3 ways you can choose to present your Honors and Awards
If you have any honors or awards that are relevant to your education, you can elect to include them beside each educational listing. (As shown in the example below)

If you have several different types Honors or Awards, you could instead elect to create a subsection within the education section to list them. (As shown in the example below)

Alternatively, you could create an OPTIONAL SECTION on your C.V or resume to list them, (as shown below)

There is limited space on a C.V or resume, that’s why should you choose to include it as an OPTIONAL SECTION, its important that you do the following
- Clearly state the title of the honor or award
- Make sure you include the date you received the reward. This can either be in month and year format (or just the year if you prefer)
- Make sure you list the name of the Issuing Organization
- Optional – you can also add a brief description of the award if you choose. (Such as the criteria required to obtain it)
Is there any difference in how you present an Honors and Awards section if your education is still ongoing?
No. If your education is ongoing, simply indicate the degree is in progress and include your Honors and Awards section in any of the 3 ways outlined above

Lastly, make sure the type of award itself is clear – these can include things such as:
Academic Excellence Awards

Athletic or Extracurricular Achievements

Conference Presentation Awards

Dean’s List

Departmental Awards

Essay or Writing Competitions

Graduation Honors

Honors Society Memberships

Research or Thesis Awards/ Publications
